When in Seoul: Wear a Hanbok!

There was so much to love about Seoul—from the bustling city life to the food to the shopping to the culture. But our most favorite experience in this quirky place is wearing the Hanbok!

Because we didn’t really do our research, we found out too late that the famous Gyeonbukgung Palace was closed on Tuesdays. Luckily, I have seen an episode of Sweet and Tasty where the host, Mina went to Unhyeongung Royal Residence and tried on a hanbok while there! (Fyi, this place is closed Mondays) So there we went, alighting at Anguk Station, exit 4. It's not a grand edifice but it is still steeped in history from the Joseon Dynasty.

Getting into the palace is free, but the hanbok rental is KRW 3,300 ($3) for 20 minutes. We were too excited to consider that that was not cheap so we went for it and boy was it glorious! We swept around Unhyeongung pretending to be part of the court…

Evidently, even local Koreans love wearing their traditional wear.  Ketie and I saw them all over the Palace District, where you can rent hanboks along Insadong and some in the Subway stations—ranging from KRW 10,000 for a few hours or KRW 25,000 for  the day-- and walk all over town, eat, shop and take photo ops with Korea’s old palaces as your background.  (If we had seen these shops beforehand, we definitely would’ve done this route, pricey though it is.)

Just take note: wearing a hanbok commands you to glide around in a grand fashion. Walking is for peasants! J
