Ketchup and Mustard. Bed and Breakfast. Mice and Men. Asians
and Karaoke. Things that just pair together effortlessly.
If you don’t already know, karaoke is a favorite Asian past
time. It’s a fact of life in Asia. However, there, you don’t really get up and perform in
front of people. You go to a KTV, in this case, a Karaoke room or “noraebang”,
gather your group of friends in your own private room and sing your heart out.
Luxury Su in Hongdae is a big KTV complex with rooms of
various sizes, renting the room by the hour. The cheapest rentals will be the
noon-6pm time slot where you can get a small room for KRW 10,000 for two hours!
So many karaoke rooms! Judging by this, there are at least 24! |
Yeah, go ahead and belt that Celine Dion song. Evidently, the karaoke cartoons weren't impressed with my singing. Go, me! |
The songlist comprises, obviously, of a lot Korean music but there are English songs and surprisingly, Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese and the list goes on and on. They even have tambourines and maracas to add extra flair. Like most Asian karaokes, these ones also judge you and grade you at the end of the song. J All in good fun, of course. A low score is no deterrent to good times singing karaoke.
We got the sunken karaoke room. Very cozy! |
There’s something
about being in an intimate setting with your closest friends/ relatives along
with some drinks and grub, that makes one belt out that Sia song with abandon,
little caring for notes and pitch. You think you’re insulated from the world,
but the truth is everybody else can hear you! J
They just don’t know where the banshee sound is coming from, so you are still safe.
So, go on and unleash your best Bohemian Rhapsody rendition! (Man, that’s an
epic song. *tips hat to Freddie Mercury*) You do you.
Xoxo,
Karrisa and Ketie
